Mayesh Design Star Floral Workshop | Carlsbad

The fourth stop on the Mayesh Design Star workshop tour took Christy Hulsey of Colonial House of Flowers to San Diego, CA, just south of their branch inCarlsbad. The workshop was held at Brick + Laurel, an eclectic event space in La Mesa that perfectly fit the beachy vibes of San Diego and served as the backdrop to a gorgeous palette of creams, peaches and blushes. The students worked with some of the best South American, Dutch & local product on the market to create their airy garden arrangements and bouquets.

The day began with Christy and the students sharing their flower stories,  a lovely way to get to know one another and create an intimate setting. Mayesh’s CEO, Pat Dahlson, was also in attendance and shared the Mayesh family’s inspiring flower story and their dedication to being an educational resource to the flower community. The morning was filled with educational demos, from the many ways to utilize Design Master color tools to a demo on the mechanics of building a hanging base for a garland to floral photography tips & tricks from fine art photographer Nicole Clarey.

In true San Diego fashion, the students were treated to a delicious lunch of tacos and tasty Mexican sides, cooked onsite by Del Mar Taco Co., and then the real fun could begin. Christy Hulsey instructed the students on how to create a garden style arrangement using Accent Decor’s Orion compote. Starting with a base of Oasis floral netting secured with floral tape, Christy pulled from a beautiful selection of foliages to create her base, and then built on that with fluffy peach peonies and ranunculus, blush Juliet garden roses and many more yummy flowers.

Next came Christy’s signature lush, garden style bouquet, which she constructed by first creating a foliage base in the shape of an “X”, adding her large, focal blooms, and finishing it off with airy, dancing flowers and textural pieces to add visual interest and a whimsical feel. The students were then given the opportunity to create their own arrangement and bouquet, and Nicole Clarey photographed their designs on a beautiful styled table by Tristan Needham Design. Local rental company Adore Folklore provided the beautiful dark farm table, chairs, and all dishes, glasses and flatware, and the look was completed with a beautiful silk chiffon runner from Tono & Co. and simple taper candles from Creative Candles.

It was such a fun and beautiful day, topped off by a yummy glass of Cameron Hughes wine and overflowing swag bags filled with goodies from the workshop’s sponsors.
